The concrete sunrise Explosions in our future's eyes A planet broadcasting to the stars A final function The furnace for our soul's combustion Forges of the future never tire I learned that in the fire Rockets with their roots in the chaos Aim high Hoping for free return (they're waiting for us to burn) Tests will spark up the current And I'll be the living wire This Earth is to be escaped from I learned that in the fire From dust to the Moon The burning will prove We are go for TLI Dont open the door My part is ending And you need to stay on stage Step back and start the new phase Please oh Father please forgive me I'm gunning for your sight Your eyes have not failed to inspire This future of all fire With their last breath of air We stood helplessly by While our sons where consumed by the flame Feet on the ground Our eyes to the sky We'll make this first burn tonight

Silently we soar Over the Sea of Tranquility Sextant to the stars We soar We soar We lit the morning sky And cast the moorings of the Earth Mariners sent forth To be the first around the moon Deep into the storm The surface reigns like royalty The scarred, deserted plain The shock in my brain The map that guides our way And brings the fallen gods to bear On the bright and distant goal To be the first around the moon All that know you behind an outstretched thumb Tiniest marble of blue Our fate is woven into the gravity The slightest sliver of space

Silent acceleration Sequence has engaged Life has begun Signal start separation Fires spit their waste at the sun Eagle please check position You're aiming for the hope of our world Descent the crater looming We've got our landing place and time to burn See the stars They align to light our way below Before we touch We will once more look back home Shadows throw bones into the sky These jagged, hellish lines The bounty of my eye Thrust the capsule shaking Dust begins to swell Dust is our fate Faith in science fiction Are we really where they say we are?

This first time I'll lay you down In the greying sand Without sight or sound This tortured surface I feel so gone Your heaven never wanted me I wanted vision I got all that could see So picture perfect So viciously empty Magnificent desolation With all our wonder we'll find Our way to escape With a single human step We reached another world Laid our past down in the dust And rose above it all In the evening's dying breath We left behind our lives Arm's length from the future The masters of our sky

A mountain A mile It doesn't matter in this place The landscape barely blurs at all A moment A memory A fading light forever chased The surface of the future Will I recall ever feature? A mission A milestone A threshold crossed by powered flight A planet poised on every word A method Of motion A simple yet effective craft To carry us beyond the reach of man The tires kick their dust across a barren virgin world Where no-one else has been In front of the console A world watches in disbelief The camera broadcasting from the stars The Edge of the chasm The rille reveals it's ancient face And lost in proportion We stand upon the precipice Void of all atmosphere the distant details never blur A horizon that barely fades at all It barely fades at all The surface of the future A tiny disk of blue Mountains crack the darkest sky These eyes have ever seen (I can't feel me) Through the empty air This brilliant light Where nothing can live And everything will die I placed your precious photograph down there In the wretched dust And took one last look at the world of the future

Surveyor 06:30
Here I stand The summit of it all A decade's dream realized at last My eyes upon you now Forgotten craft The statue of this age No greater sign to what it is To who we are Flying forty thousand feet above the desert Never thought I'd be the one to set foot in this place Now I'm standing before Surveyor And I can finally breathe in space Here we stand The apex of the mission Contact light engine stop Prepare to hit the mark And now this man Can greet this third machine Still intact Staring back To where we are Come within a hundred yards on another world A marvel of radio-telemetry All the years of endless training Of stars and dark skies Now am I the highest light The bright inside the blind Seeking to control the greatest flight My beautiful Surveyor You're right where they said you would be With a rocket's great wrath We set out for your distant shore One small step closer to thee Sent long ago The beacon for our lifetime You were right where they said you would be Contact Earth rise Don't let controls die Wasted in my sight Break in the dark Silence your spark Fill up all I can see Surveyor Down in the dust A product of our mind Sent Long ago for our future to find Surveyor you're right they said you would be

Tranmission Receive trajectory Escape the gravity And point us back to Slightest sliver of space We burn through our fuel and point our path Back to the sky A decade done Upon the distant shore Now go for TEI

Here we drift Alone on an ocean Of endless black Falling back to A tiny disk of blue Frozen cold Sub-circuits disabled Humble craft Limping back On our free return Eye of god Lost in the abyss Distant light Growing bright This tiny disk of blue Flip the switch The stage will drift away No-one will see this life we lead On our free return The cabin shakes Alarms sound The atmosphere around you starts pressing down Outside the flames of hell ignite As the plasma glow illuminates the crushing night Fire From dust to the moon

about

"a Man on the Moon" is a story about starting out with the best plans and intentions and watching it all go up in flames before it even leaves the launch pad.
It's the frustration of having to pick up all the pieces that are now even heavier and starting all over again. It's about how despite the gravity of everything around you pulling you down, sheer willpower overcomes it and you take flight to incredible places.
In the almost 9 years it took to produce "a Man on the Moon" it seemed like life threw almost everything it could at us. In some respects the story was writing itself.
If anything We hope the album conveys that no matter what anybody tells you, you create your own reality. The recipe is time, courage, and commitment.
